Here’s Why Your Bed Sheets and Pillowcase Have More Bacteria Than A Toilet Seat
Not very many people resort to changing their pillowcases and bedsheets regularly which has now led scientists to exclaim after thorough research that your pillowcase may be even dirtier than your toilet seat. It is single men especially who dislike or feel too lazy to change sheets where statistics have found that 55% of single men aged between 18-25 changed their bed linen just four times a year which is really icky. These are the kind of beds that no one should ever think of sleeping in because they would be carrying more germs than a toilet seat and here’s why.
1Not washing bed linen gives dust mites a feast
The main reason for this observation is that by not washing bed linen, you are providing a feast for thousands of dust mites who have made their home in your bed sheets and pillowcase. Your body is shedding almost 15 million skin cells each night and by nit washing your sheets, these dust mites are being provided a feast daily.
For 20 million Americans, the presence of dust mites is bad news because this number comprises people allergic to the proteins produced by dust mites and their feces. When sheets are not washed, bacteria and fungi also build up which is why your pillowcase may be home to more bacteria than your toilet seat.
2Allergens are caused by proteins produced by dust mites
Those 15 million skin cells that you shed every night is a real feast by dust mites who thrive on such food. The longer you use the sheets, the more the food source which then helps the mites to multiply. This also means that by not washing your sheets you are sharing your beds with thousands of arachnids.
For the millions of Americans suffering allergies, it is even worse. The main reason why you may be experiencing symptoms of sneezing, itchy nose, red and watery eyes is because these dust mites produce proteins that are allergens for many. It is these proteins that cause such symptoms.
3Not just mites, fungus too
However, the dust mites and their allergens aren’t the only culprits that cause you to get sick. It is a type of fungus that also builds up in dirty and unwashed sheets. One particular study found that almost 16 varieties of fungus and millions of fungal spores could be living in unwashed pillowcases. The most common fungus among these is one named Aspergillus Fumigatis. This type can be quite dangerous for people simply because it also affects the lungs by infecting them. It can also infect other organs as well.
439 more times bacteria in pillows and sheets
Bacteria love unwashed pillowcases and sheets. Another study found that there are 39 times more bacteria in unwashed pillow cases than pet food bowls and thousands more than a toilet seat. Bacteria like staphylococcus aureus is a deadly type o bacteria that can find its way in such places.
