We often take things for granted and another stunning case of human ignorance was seen this August 2019. The Amazon rainforest was on fire and instead of reporting on it and altering the world that the lungs of our blue and green planet are on fire, the media chose silence. Now, granted that even if the media did report on the fires we could not do anything to stop it.

But, at least the rich and famous could start pooling in their money to make things right. Now that the damage has been done let’s take a look at what will happen if the rainforest completely burns down.

1The Amazon fire

Recently, social media was full of posts and news about the Amazon being on fire for three weeks, but the news not being reported by media outlets. Essentially, people didn’t really care until the smoke reached the cities and São Paulo was covered in thick smoke. Many said the fire was due to global warming and extreme heat but the real reason was more devastating.

2The actual scale of the threat

Just this year, there were a record 74,000 fires in the rainforest in Brazil. Deforestation, global warming, and environmental malpractices are all responsible for this sad loss. Scientists have estimated that every single day, we are losing a chunk of the rainforest the “size of a football field”. If we lose the Amazon, we lose the “Lungs of the Earth”.

3The real reason

Forest fires often start and spread because of extreme heat, but this time was different. In this year itself, there had already been several minor fires in the forest. But the major one was actually manmade. Farmers are known to burn portions of forests to clear land and make the land more fertile. That is what they did but the fire spread and no effort was put in to extinguish it.

4The sad truth

As the fires kept raging, thousands of animals and plant died. Who was the ultimate culprit then? Most believe, it is the Brazilian government led by Jair Bolsonaro. People have been protesting against the government for its lack of concern about the environment. The government consciously cut funds of Brazil’s main environmental agency and this has resulted in massive malpractice by farmers and lumberjacks.

5Worse result in future

As large parts of the Amazon forest are burning every single day, this will permanently change the weather of the area and make it hotter, leading to more fires. Thus a vicious cycle will be established which cannot be broken. As tress burn, erosion increases, dangerous gases are released and the temperature increases more ultimately leading to widespread destruction.
