Russia Becomes First Country with a Fully Operational Hypersonic Weapon That No Country Can Defend Against
General Sergei Karakayev who is the Strategic Missile Forces chief said that the Avanguard was put on duty and attached to a unit in the Orenburg region in the southern Urals Mountains. The Avanguard was launched from the Dombarovsky missile base in the southern Urals in December 2018. It was successful in hitting a test target on the Kursa shooting range on the Kamchatka, 6,000 km away.
5A technological breakthrough says President Putin
President Putin proudly unveiled the Avanguard among the other prospective weapon systems in what was his state of the nation address in March 2018. He emphasized on the system’s ability for sharp manoeuvres on its way to hit a target that will render even advanced weapon systems defenceless and useless. Putin described the creation of the Avanguard as a technological breakthrough that was pathbreaking in the country’s history of defence production. He also compared the milestone to the 1957 Soviet launch of the first satellite.
6 “Like A Fireball”
The Russian leader also noted how the Avanguard’s sophisticated design used new composite material that could withstand temperatures up to 2000C that resulted from flying through the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds. In his address last year, when the Avanguard was being developed and tested, Putin said “it heads to target like a meteorite, like a fireball.” President Putin also emphasized earlier in the week that Russia is now the only country with hypersonic weapons.
727 times faster than the speed of sound
President Putin has noted how Russia for the first time in history is now the world leader in developing an entirely new class of weapons. This was unlike the past when it was trying instead to match up to the USA in weapons systems. According to the Russian military, the Avanguard can fly 27 times faster than the speed of sound.
