New York Finally Bans Plastic After California
6Bangladesh did it first
Believe it or not, but Bangladesh was the very first country to make this decision and ban plastic bags way back in 2002. Soon after South Africa, China, the Netherlands, Israel, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Morocco, etc followed. This was a great step for Bangladesh and a good role model for other countries to follow.
The alternative that most countries took was to charge for each plastic bag at every store. This didn’t go as planned as many people didn’t mind paying the few extra cents for a bag. Countries like the UK have a 5-pence charge on plastic bags but countries like Australia stopped handing them out altogether. People had to bring their own bags or carry their things at home.
8Who gave this idea?
This idea was given by Andrew Mark Cuomo who is a lawyer and also serving as the 56th Governor of New York since 2011. Watching how California took a stand against plastic bags, he too believed New York can make a positive change so he decided to give his suggestion which the state took up.
9This is for our future generations
According to Andrew himself, he said that the bags are a danger to the environment as well as to the wildlife. He said that the bags are clogging our waterways and harming an already damaged planet. If we want a secure future for our planet and future generations we need to act now before it gets too late.
10Plastic Bag Overload
The only way to take care of plastic bags is to recycle or dispose of them properly. Unfortunately, we are using way more bags than we are destroying or recycling. This pollutes the environment and currently, we cannot do much to stop it. The only way we can gain any amount of control on the situation is if we somehow stop the consumption and increase the recycling or destruction of plastic.
