New York Finally Bans Plastic After California
Plastic bags seem to be an important part of life. We go to any store with a carefree mind because we know if we buy a few things we can carry them easily by hand but if we buy many things, the store will give us a carry bag. But, the issue is that that bag is made from plastic.
We may reuse that bag for something but at some point, that bag is going in the dustbin and from there? From there that bag is either recycled but unfortunately, the chances of that bag ending up in a landfill are higher. And it is in that landfill where it will take 1000 years to degrade into the soil and if it is thrown into the sea, it will be the cause of death for numerous animals.
1A Plastic flood
Plastic has reached an all-time high this year with environmental advocates estimating that New York uses around 23 billion plastic bags annually. This is really bad news for the environment and the reason why New York finally decided to strike a ban on plastic bags. After California, this is the second state-wide ban in America.
2Why a ban?
The reason why New York had to impose a ban was that no other alternative method was working. They had begun using and implementing paper bags at groceries stores but that wasn’t enough. New York was still using plastic bags and it had crossed the limit and something needed to be done.
California realized this issue back in 2016 and that is when they issued their ban on plastic bags. New York still took 3 years to realize their alternative solutions were not working as planned. Stores were providing paper bags but not all of them. Finally, New York had to give in and issue a State-wide ban on plastic bags.
4Other places that ban plastic
New York and California aren’t the only places to put a ban on plastic bags. Hawaii was another place that realized that putting alternative solutions like paper bags are one thing but if you want better results you need to place and ban on the product you do not want to see being used. This is the only to stop it.
5Why is plastic so bad?
Plastic is one of the most harmful synthetic products we have ever created as it is non-biodegradable. This means that they cannot be destroyed by nature. The only way we can destroy plastic is by burning it which in return, produces poisonous gases. If not taken care of, then plastic lying around can have disastrous effects on wildlife.
