A lion couple named Hubert and Kalisa who were always together and were practically ‘inseparable’ were put down together at their home in the Los Angeles Zoo. According to the zoo officials, these African lions hard already outlived their normal lifespan and had been in declining health because their quality of life had been diminished due to age-related illnesses. However, they had grown up together and just couldn’t do without the other.

1A hard but heartfelt decision taking the animals welfare into account

The zoo chose to make the difficult decision to euthanize the lion couple together. Hubert and Kalisa were popular for their ‘undivided attention’ on each other as they rested, cuddled, and nuzzled often. After being moved from their previous home at Seattle’s Woodland Park Zoo, where the lions met, Hubert and Kalisa lived together for six years in Los Angeles. Both lions were 21 years old and had far outlived their normal lifespan of around 14-17 years.

2Unfortunately the lions were in declining health

The zoo had stated that the lion couple were in “declining health” due to ‘age-related illnesses which had diminished their quality of life’. The officials of the zoo announced in a statement on Thursday that “The Los Angeles Zoo is sad to announce the death of our African lion pair, Hubert and Kalisa. Animal care and health staff made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the 21-year-old companions”.

3There are no plans to add more lions

No plans have been made by the zoo to add more lions at the moment. The curator of mammals at the zoo said- “This is a very hard loss for our Zoo community. You cannot think of Hubert without thinking of his companion, Kalisa; they’ve been an inseparable couple for years”.
