It is a weird world that we live in where religions that preach non-cruelty and advocate non-violence against all living beings are observed with rituals using animals to the point of making them suffer the worst possible plight. One biggest example is Tikiri a 70-year-old emaciated elephant whose ordeal has gone viral and all in the name of religion. Tikiri is an elephant forced to work relentless during Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka. Her malnourished body is hidden by festival and ritual robes so people can’t see the biter reality.

1 She is old and fragile, yet made to work

Tikiri is so old and fragile and is repeatedly tortured by her owners presumably a temple in Sri Lanka. The elephant’s emaciated body is hidden by the heavy drapes of festival clothing and costumes. She is shackled every night at the Perahera Festival which is the grandest and oldest Buddhist festival in Sri Lanka.

2Her robes and costume hide her emaciated body

Tikiri is draped in elaborate robes that stretch right down to the floor. As such no one can even see the horror of how she looks. Her frail body has been scrubbed raw and she is one among sixty elephants who are literally tortured and forced to work for several nights in a stretch at the Esala Perahera, a Buddhist festival celebrating a religion that ironically preaches no cruelty to any living thing. It proves that perhaps religion teaches the right thing but men are hypocrites of the highest order and the so-called Buddhist priests and temple authorities condoning such acts are as deplorable as their hypocrisy.
