Even as scientists around the world are more pre-occupied with the coronavirus, an amazing breakthrough in the fight against cancer has just taken place. Scientists have formulated a test to detect five types of cancer four years before they appear. This is a phenomenal achievement with the potential to save thousands of lives because the test will also detect tumors in the lungs and liver. Called the PanSeer test, it will identify those who are also at high risk of contracting such diseases.

1Test requires just one blood sample to detect five types of cancers

The test not only will detect those who are at risk of cancers, just one simple blood sample will detect five types of cancers including those at risk. The research involved an analysis of plasma samples from 605 people without symptoms. Those with possible cancer release tiny DBA fragments of the disease into the body. The biopsy which is of the liquid type will make a blood analysis to detect these tiny DNA fragments. The five type of cancers are lung, liver, bowel, oesophagus and stomach cancers including tumors.

During the research, the scientists found that the test could detect the five types of cancer four years before the standard diagnostic methods were able to do so. The researchers said that the test was so much predicting cancers but spitting tumors earlier when they were still in asymptomatic stages. This of course will be the biggest benefit of the test mainly because most cancers always show symptoms when it is generally in later stages when not much can be done.

3Test will include liquid biopsy

The new type of liquid biopsy is being considered a revolution in cancer diagnosis. It detects slow-growing cancers years in advance and the biggest advantage is that it does not use invasive methods. Today the most common and current screening method includes imaging or biopsies done the conventional way.
