There are very few negative effects that soy could have on health in comparison to the huge number of positive health benefits of soy. However, there is still some uncertainty on how it could possibly impact other conditions.
It is unknown if it has an effect on breast cancer: Many breast cancers require estrogen to grow which is why soy could make breast cancer worse. As such, the consumption of soy could likely increase the risk of breast cancer because of its estrogen content. But there are many studies which argue that this is not the case.
The goitrogens in soy could possibly block iodine absorption which can negatively affect the thyroid. According to some research, soy isoflavones including genistein can potentially block the production of thyroid hormones. Yet, these findings are only limited to test-tube animal studies.

Since soy contains phytoestrogens, men, in particular, hesitate about whether they should include soy into their diet or not. But studies still do not indicate that soy has any impact on male testosterone production.
14Soy might contain GMO
There are many soy products which are genetically modified. Whether it is safe to consume genetically modified organisms or GMO is still a controversial topic. This requires more long-term scientific studies to determine their effects in humans and to determine in what quantity these can be considered safe for consumption. Some soy products even contain glyphosate residues which have a poor nutritional profile in comparison t organic soy beans.

A review has suggested that soybean agglutinins may impact digestion. It can influence the structure and barrier function of the gut. These agglutinins are a type of anti-nutrient which can have several negative side effects. They can even disrupt gut health by attacking the microbiome which is a group of beneficial bacteria in your digestive tract. Several other anti-nutrients may also be present in soy such as phytates, α-amylase inhibiting factors, and trypsin inhibitors.
