A Hairdresser Shares Popular Hair Care Habits That Actually Damage It
Caring for your hair is a healthy habit which should be done consistently to improve personal hygiene. But, sometimes certain hair care practices can actually damage your hair instead of doing any good for it.
A hairdresser named Vera who has been working in the beauty industry for 6 years shared some of her insights and tips on how to sustain healthy and attractive looking hair. She even has her own personal blog- The Hairdresser’s diary, where she shares her professional secrets. Here are some of the most common hair damaging habits pointed out by her:
1Washing your hair with hard water
If you notice a white coating inside your teapots and faucets, it means that you are using hard water. This same coating can appear on your hair as well. This is because of the calcium and magnesium salts present in the water which get accumulated on your hair, turning it lifeless and brittle. This further causes dandruff and risk of eczema.
Colored hair can be ruined by hard water. The color gets washed off quickly and faded. For instance, even the brightest cold blonde can even turn yellow really fast. When you have salt clogged in your hair, it makes it worse for coloring because it becomes difficult to lighten it and give it a cool shade.
- Wash your hair with boiled water.
- Use balms and hair masks to nourish and moisturize your hair.
- Instill a filter on your shower or tap.
2Bad habits that lead to hair getting tangled
Rolling your hair around your fingers can lead to your hair forming knots and split ends. These kinds of hair damaging habits lead to your hair getting tangled. But dryness is one of the most common reasons why your hair gets tangled very often.
The structure of hair is similar to that of a tile consisting of a core and shell. When the top layer becomes dry the flakes which are adjacent to each other open and start clinging to each other and form knots. To avoid this you have to apply a special spray after washing and drying your hair. You can even do moisturizing masks more often. People with thin hair should be more careful because their hair is more prone to getting tangled. For thin hair, it would be best to choose shampoos which contain: sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, lauryl glucosid, sodium cocoyl isethionate, decyl glucoside, and сocamidopropyl betaine.
3Sleeping with wet hair
Going to bed with wet hair is one of the worst among hair damaging habits. Always dry your hair at least a little even if you are very tired because in the morning you won’t be able to style your hair. If your hair dries in a certain way while you sleep, you won’t be able to undo it in the morning.
Wet hair also leads to bacterial growth. You can get an itchy scalp, dandruff, and other scalp issues. Instead of rubbing or wrapping your hair up after washing it, pat it dry because your hair is quite sensitive. It would be best to blow-dry your hair with cold air since it is less harmful. Use a special spray which can help your hair dry quickly if you are too tired to dry it.
