7 Compelling Reasons to Stop Sleeping On Your Stomach and Your Right Side
Heartburn, indigestion, low back pain and several common problems are often caused by the wrong sleep posture instead of anything else. Yet we don’t realise that it is the way we sleep that is causing our problems simply because we prefer to sleep in certain ways that make us comfortable. But, those sleeping positions aren’t always god for health. We sleep for at least 6-8 hours a day and lying in a wrong position for that length of time can damage our bodies. Some of the worst health issues may be because of sleeping in two bad positions and that is on the right side or on your stomach.
1It causes heartburn
When you lie flat on your back or on your right side, it can lead to gastric issues called Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). For those already suffering from the disease, the condition can worsen. This happens because the valve that prevents acid from going out of the stomach cannot work due to the gravity of the position. As a result, stomach contents and acid enter the bottom of the esophagus making you experience heartburn and epigastric distress. Moreover, you can experience a bad acid taste in the mouth accompanied by chest pain.
What you should do
The ideal way to sleep would be on the left side and also increase the incline at the top end of your body. This position helps provide relief in those suffering frequent heartburn and GERD because the stomach is kept in a position that prevents food and acid leaving it and leaking out of the esophagus valve.
2It is bad for your spine and back
Sleeping on the right side and flat on the back is also bad for those suffering from chronic back pain because the pressure on your back and spine is increased throughout the night. Another reason is that the entire weight of the body falls on these two areas resulting in discomfort once you wake up. Your spine is not set in this natural position which is why when pressure is exerted by the wrong sleeping position, there is a need to stretch and change positions because of the possible feeling of numbness.
It’s better to
If you feel there is no other position that you can sleep in, then it is best to make some adjustments to maintain the natural curve of your spine. Place a pillow beneath your pelvis and one pillow beneath your head. You can also place the pillow below your knees. While lying on your side, place a pillow beneath your head and one between your legs.
