When you hear of big fashion brands you will naturally think of Victoria’s Secret. It is one of the most well-known and biggest names in the fashion industry. Their annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show is watched by millions and even has big names in the music industry perform there.
But last year in 2018, a huge mistake was made and certain comments and remarks were made that should not have been said. This led to a tremendous backlash that resulted in this year’s Victoria’s Secret fashion show to be canceled.
1Who is ValentinaSampaio?
ValentinaSampaio is a Brazilian model and actress whose name has been making the rounds online for the past few weeks after she became Victoria’s Secret’s first openly transgender model. This came as big news to the online community and a huge step for the modeling industry. As an actress, she was seen in one movie and TV show, both in 2017.
2Her early life
She was born on 10th December 1996 in a fishing village in Aquiraz, Ceará which is located in the Northeastern part of Brazil. Her mother was a schoolteacher and her father was a farmer. When she was 8-years old her psychologist identified her as transgender. In many interviews, she mentioned that living in a small village, she was never bullied or mistreated for her gender identification.
In interviews, she has always stated that her parents were always very supportive of her. They never discouraged her or mistreated her in any way. She also said that her classmates were also very supportive and accepting of her gender. According to her, her parents always saw her as their little girl and nothing else.
She began studying architecture in Fortaleza but soon became disinterested and dropped out. She began studying fashion at a fashion college at the age of 16. This was going to be the first step that changed her life. It was here that a makeup artist discovered her and got her a deal with a São Paulo modeling agency.
5A rough start
Valentina had a very rough start in the fashion industry. She was fired from a clothing line as one of their models due to her transgender identification. According to her the company was conservative and believed they would lose clients if a transgender appeared as one of their models. The company had hired her but then changed their mind mid-way.
