11She has photographed woman all over the world
Elisabeth has photographed women all over the world from ages 20-50 and she says that for the women it wasn’t only about being photographed, it was an experience of expressing themselves creatively and it was also a therapeutic experience too. 90% of the women had never been photographed and in front of a camera she says and the photoshoot made them step out of their comfort zone.
This is one of the women she photographed named Gaby her 5th subject. She says she felt honored that Gaby took part in her project. The two also spoke at length about how to cope with the challenges of accepting something that one cannot even control. “Vitiligo can take over our skin, but can’t take over our pride and awesomeness! That’s what’s Gaby is all about: an awesome freakin’ woman”
13A journey of self-acceptance
Elisabeth describes how rewarded she felt during her photoshoot project that filed her with self-confidence. She says it became a journey of healing and self-acceptance. “It is wonderful that there is such a big community on social media which has made me able to connect with all these beautiful individuals. It has been such a positive journey, for me and for the ones I portrayed.”
14No cure for the condition
There is no cure yet for vitiligo and neither can one do anything to prevent the condition from spreading. Doctors only provide means to improve the affected parts appearance with the help of corticosteroids creams and cosmetics. There are other commonly used solutions like UV light therapy or lightening the skin in affected areas or even skin grafts but how helpful are they is another story.
The woman below is Natalie, Elisabeth’s first subject of the Shades of Pale project. She says she was honored because Natalie also travelled all the way from Amsterdam to meet Elisabeth. As you can see, she is no less beautiful.
