Mother Hippo Gets Tossed by Angry Elephant but She Clings on Long Enough to Help Her Calf Escape
They say a mother will do anything for her child, even if it means sacrificing herself in her own way. That’s not only true for the human race but for animals as well. Recently, this was just proven when a mother hippo faced the wrath of a huge male elephant so that her calf could escape to safety. Here’s how the incident unfolds.
10 A hippo was tossed several feet into the air by an elephant
A fully-grown hippopotamus confronted a massive African male elephant and was flipped several feet into the air by the aggressive Tusker. The female hippo chose to face the big bull after it became agitated when she wandered a bit too close.
9 She stood her ground, facing a much larger and stronger adversary
As she stood her ground to protect and allow her calf time to flee to safety, the elephant charged straight toward her. The elephant easily tossed her into the air. Fortunately, she emerged relatively unhurt from the attack.
8 The mother hippo escaped with minor injuries
Despite the force of the attack, the mother hippo emerged relatively unscathed. All she suffered was a cut on the side of her body. After being flipped into the air by the angry elephant, the hippo rolls into the water.
7 A wildlife photographer managed to capture the entire incident on camera
The moment was captured on camera by a South African wildlife photographer present at the site, 40-year-old Rian Van Schalkwyk, who captured the scene at the Erindi Private Game Reserve in Windhoek, Namibia. He said- “I felt incredible privileged to see this. I’ve been in the bush ɑ long time, but this was the most spectacular scene I’ve ever witnessed; I couldn’t believe it.”
