When a fisherman was showing tourists around Lake Vygozero in the Karelia region of Russia, they spotted two unusual animals in the middle of the lake. Upon getting closer to the animals, everyone aboard was surprised to see that two brown bear cubs were desperately trying to stay afloat and swim to safety.

The video from 2017 shows that the wild animals lost their mother when she thought they could swim better than they could. Ruslan Lukanin from Moscow said, “They had swum across the lake with their mother. But she overestimated her strength and swam away. The cubs began to sink. We picked them up and dragged them to the island to which their mother had swum. It was dangerous, of course. But they are living creatures. We couldn’t just look the other way.”

Being out swimming in the lake’s cold waters for so long had completely drained the little cubs of their energy. The cubs were exhausted and were literally going under.
