Car Accident Led To The Discovery Of The Man With The World’s Densest Bones
11It is a gene mutation
At first, it was believed that this was caused by chromosome 11. It took a few years of research to prove this to be wrong. Insogna and his team studied the man’s family tree and the entire family to see how far back this went. They were able to make a connection between chromosome 11 and high bone density.
12It was a dead-end
By the time they realized their found connection was false other researches began studying the condition. Case Western Reserve University’s Matthew Warman and his team were the ones to discover that a gene mutation called “LRP5” was responsible for low bone density. Insogna heard about this work and began his research in the same direction.
13Does this actually give you superpowers?
No, your bones only get dense due to this condition. You do not gain any superpowers. You will be immune to getting a bone fracture to a certain extent but nothing like the comic books. It will also make it impossible for you to swim as you will not be able to stay afloat.
14How is life with this condition?
According to the people living with this condition, life is the same as others. You just don’t get hurt that often. You will also be able to survive the coldest of winters as your bones will not shiver easily. Just like we said before you will not be able to enter deep bodies of water.
15There are others
There are many other gene mutations that cause other superpowers like features in humans. Knowing all about these mutations will help researchers understand how they develop and maybe one day we can trigger them manually that will help them make our lives easier. Think about a life where you can never break a bone?
